Much thanks to the Smithsonian Institution, we are thoroughly entertained.
I still can't get over that there are so many free things to do in DC and it makes me happy. Too bad we aren't here for long enough, otherwise I would love to volunteer there. Only 3 weeks left, I really have to manage my time well between going to site and visiting museums.
We were there for about 4 hours but there were still about a 1/3 of the
zoo that we haven't been to, due to construction and low level of interest.

I personally think this zoo is much nicer than most of the other zoos I've been to, but there were many bad reviews on the internet. Mostly complaining that the animals were hiding. Sometime it took us a while to look for the animal, or we simply couldn't see them, but the exhibits were built to mimic the natural environment of the animals as close as possible....and go figure, animals generally hide, unless they are gorillas or orangutan who enjoyed Homo sapiens watching them vomit. So if you expect all animals to be on display in concrete rooms with metal bars, and minimal walking, National Zoo would be a disappointment.
